Tarantula
Tarantula is the Knowledge Basket's Research Spider. It crawls the New Zealand Web
under the direction of a human editor, and indexes in depth the sites we identify for it.
Tarantula indexes a huge number of document types, including Adobe Acrobat (PDF),
Microsoft Word, XML, and many others. There is no meaningful limit to the size of
document it will index, and it indexes the full text of the entire document. Tarantula
will extract Metadata as fields or search zones, which can be used in your search -
including Dublin Core metadata.
Searching
When you have done a search, and are viewing the results, you will notice that each
result record includes the title of the document (or its file name if there is no title), a
"snippet" from the document text, the document size (in bytes), and then the URL of
the document. It is important for you to know that if you click on the Title link, you will
be presented with a filtered version of the file, if it is not a Web (HTML) document.
That is, you will see the "plain text" of the document, without having to use a "plugin"
- even for PDF and MS Word files. Search word "hits" will be highlighted in red in the
document. In the case of PDF (Acrobat) format documents that are viewed in this way,
the display will be rather ugly. If you click on the URL link however, you can view the
document with the appropriate plugin. This will show a "rich text"
version of the document - however it will take longer to download to your viewer.
Example
This family law paper is designed to promote discussion about the welfare of our
children and the basic rules our society has made about rights and
responsibilities in family relationships. This law relating to
guardianship, custody and access is over thirty years old.
In the example above, the original legal document is in
Microsoft Word format. If you click on the
title a plain text version of the file will be displayed with search
words highlighted. If you click on the URL your browser will either display
a rich text version of the document, or it will prompt you to name a
viewer, or it will attempt to install one, depending on what software
you have installed on your system, or which browser you are using. If you need it, you can download it from here.
